Structures beyond superspace.

After Shechtman et al. (1984) published the paradigm-shattering ‘Metallic Phase with Long-Range Orientational Order and No Translational Symmetry’, it was evident (to all but quasicrystal-deniers) that the textbook answer to ‘what is a crystal?’ no longer sufficed. In response, the IUCr charged its newly appointed Commission on Aperiodic Crystals with finding a sufficiently broad definition of ...

High-field 127I NMR of solid sheelite structures: periodates revisited.

We report new solid-state 127I NMR results for sheelite periodates, MIO4 (M = Na+, K+, Rb+, and NH4+), and for pseudo-scheelite CsIO4 and HIO4. The observed 127I quadrupole coupling constants were between 1.0 and 43.0 MHz in agreement with previous NQR data. In contrast to an early 127I NMR study (S. L. Segel and H. M. Vyas, 1980, J. Chem. Phys. 72, 1406), we found that the 127I chemical shift ...

On Superspace Chern-Simons-like Terms

We search for superspace Chern-Simons-like higher-derivative terms in the low energy effective actions of supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Superspace ChernSimons-like terms are those gauge-invariant terms which cannot be written solely in terms of field strength superfields and covariant derivatives, but in which a gauge potential superfield appears explicitly. We find one class of s...

A [2+2+2] cyclization strategy for the synthesis of phosphorus embedding [6]helicene-like structures.

A Ni(0) promoted intramolecular [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization of triynes provides suitable access to a new series of phosphorus embedding helicenes. [6]Oxahelicenes in which the helical sequence terminates with a phosphole oxide unit have been prepared in both racemic and enantiopure forms and characterized by X-ray diffraction studies.

Learning Hierarchical Structures with Linear Relational Embedding

We present Linear Relational Embedding (LRE), a new method of learning a distributed representation of concepts from data consisting of instances of relations between given concepts. Its final goal is to be able to generalize, i.e. infer new instances of these relations among the concepts. On a task involving family relationships we show that LRE can generalize better than any previously publis...
